Mushegian and Rune Christensen co-founded MakerDAO, the first decentralized stablecoin project on the Ethereum Blockchain.[1] In 2020, Mushegian co-founded the RAI project, a DAO which generates the Rai stablecoin, the first stablecoin to have a scalable, purely crypto-backed design.[2]

Nikolai Mushegian was found dead after having sent some noticeable tweets:[3]

The New York Post did gather comments by people who knew him, "many believe his death was no accident. While those in the crypto called him brilliant but paranoid" - "He saw a psychiatrist at times. He smoked a lot of pot. A tremendous amount" - "Some of his paranoia was based on fact,” the source added. “He’d discover things. He knew things. Nikolai got bored a lot with the mundane of life. He’d go after things, constantly putting himself in weird positions. It wasn’t for the money. He was interested in why things were the way they were and the corruption behind it". His family said that he was in a “downward spiral” in recent weeks.[7]

As of February 2025, Wikipedia makes no mention of these tweets, writing that "The police investigation found no foul play".[8] Edits to the effect have been removed; on the talk age of the article the names Brock Pierce, Autumn Radtke and Tiantian Kullander are getting mentioned.[9]
