Germany and the United States have had diplomatic relations since the German unification in 1871. The list of ambassadors below are from The Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) after World War 2, which continued after the German reunification in 1990.
This is the most prestigious of German diplomatic postings.
The German Democratic Republic (East Germany) had a established a diplomatic relations with an embassy in Washington from 1974.
