Earl Warren was an American lawyer, politician, and jurist who was governor of California from 1943 to 1953 and Chief Justice of the United State from 1953 to 1969. Warren also led the Warren Commission, a presidential commission that covered up the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

Blackmail

In a November 29, 1963 telephone conversation with Senator Richard Russell, President Johnson told how he seemingly blackmailed Warren into accepting the position as head of the commission:

Warren told me he wouldn't do it under any circumstances...He came down here and told me no twice and I just pulled out what Hoover told me about a little incident in Mexico City [..] And he started crying and said, well I won't turn you down. I'll just do whatever you say...[1]
