ok so I intended to make a destinction from movie to documentary and introduce "NWo movie" as a "subject"/|const for some, but |type= will somehow collect all in a category (this page), so I think i have to reverse and remove type and fill in |const again. / FI -- Sunvalley (talk) 01:07, 13 March 2025 (UTC)

addon: this category page was created when i set one of the films that were sorted in hollywood under examples, to |type=documentary and followed the red link. it is a category not a wiki article (did not see that right away). now i find that changs that i made to "films", whether set as "|type" or "|const" are sorted the same was in wiki articles as "examples". is that intended? -- Sunvalley (talk) 01:26, 13 March 2025 (UTC)

Categories are not recommended

Since we're using SMW, the only important benefit that I can think of that categories offer is familiarity (on the part of users). This is not insignificant, but since we Template:SMWDocs offers superior functionality, the only recommended use of them is for project pages (in the Wikispooks: namespace). Similarly, the |type option is very old and never worked as intended since it turned out that |const was sufficient.

All of the above having being said, the policy is not set in stone, and I welcome any creative approaches to improving the presentation of the information we have here, so if in doubt, try it -- but consider whether the page documentary would be better than this category page. I recommend use of the ask page for testing out your use of SMW. -- Robin (talk) 15:10, 13 March 2025 (UTC)

Ok, thanks. Have not been 100% clear in my wording. Categories exist but are not actively in use anymore, all via SMW .. get it. What I wanted was sorting films from documentaries and move all away from Hollywood, that was the redirect target for "film" before. I oriented myself on the first "Example" that showed up in the Hollywood article Brazil. That one had only |type=film but no |const. So I changed all other accordingly (many had both |type=film + |const=film, so me removing film from |const=). After that I wanted to create the Documentary article, opened one documentary and clicked on the red link under type .. and this created this category page. My question basically is what to use for all films, docus, etc in the future, it appears that |type= works in the same way as |const=, in the sense that the parameter will "link" it into the target page (Brazil being the example) .. to me it just looks like that's the same result. Again question on my part is just what to use, so that would settle it. -- Sunvalley (talk) 21:03, 13 March 2025 (UTC)
