Early Life

Nuno Brederode was the son of Nuno Rodrigues dos Santos, a lawyer and freemason who opposed the dictatorship and the founder of the PSD, and who even led the Social Democrats in a collegiate direction in 1983.[2]

Opposition to the dictatorship

Opposed to Salazar's dictatorship, Brederode Santos went on hunger strike for three days when he was 16, with other students. In an interview , Brederode told how it was.

"Jorge Sampaio had just been elected president of the student association, he became secretary general of the RIA [inter-association meeting]. Then I did the things that were done in 1962. Then I went on the hunger strike. I did it without saying anything at home. My father went there, he gave me an encouraging sign. I was very touched, I thought he was going to scold me, that he would think that when he was 16 years old, this would not have happened.

The academic crisis of 1962 caught him as a freshman at the Faculty of Law of Lisbon. The fight was led by the RIA, the Inter-Associations Meeting, whose secretary-general was Jorge Sampaio, who at the time was dating Nuno's sister - Maria Emília Brederode Santos, who was studying Letters. Fearing the possibility of the RIA leadership being held by PIDE, a parallel secretariat was created. Brederode was one of its members, along with Mário Sottomayor Cardia and Tomás Rosa.

At the end of the crisis, the Government expelled 21 students from Lisbon from all schools in the capital. Brederode was one of those punished. After the expulsion was confirmed, the following October he enrolled in Coimbra, and could finish his education.

Together with Jorge Sampaio, he was central in the construction of the MES, Movement of Socialist Left, but both leave a bit later as the movement moves further left. Next, they created the GIS - Socialist Intervention Group - and joined the Socialist Party in early 1977.
