Gibraltar is a British overseas territory occupying a narrow peninsula of Spains southern Mediterranean coast, just northeast of the Strait of Gibraltar, on the east side of the Bay of Gibraltar (Bay of Algeciras), and directly south of the Spanish city of La Línea. It is 3 miles (5 km) long and 0.75 mile (1.2 km) wide and is connected to Spain. Gibraltar was heavily fortified as a British air and naval base that guards the Strait of Gibraltar, which is the only entrance to the Mediterranean Sea from the Atlantic Ocean.[1]

Gibraltar shootingsThe execution of all 3 members of an IRA 'active service unit' (ASU) by British SAS soldiers in Gibraltar on 6 March 1988. Government files on the SAS shootings that should have been made available in 2015 for public scrutiny are being withheld by the Cabinet Office, which is accused of suppressing ‘politically sensitive information’.
