Carlos Monjardino is a Portuguese banker[1] who attended the 1991 Bilderberg meeting.

Education

Born in Lisbon in 1942, he studied in London at the London School of Foreign Trade and the University of London (HND Business Studies), and in Paris (Certificat de Technique Bancaire).[2]

Career

Monjardino has a long banking career, since 1966, having held several positions in the administration of several Portuguese and European banks, namely in France and Germany. He was chairman of the board of directors of Banco Português de Gestão.[2]

In politics, Carlos Monjardino was Assistant Secretary for Economy, Finance and Tourism, and Deputy Governor of the Government of Macau (1986-1987).

In the mid-80s, he moved to Macau at the invitation of Mário Soares. In that territory, he negotiated the renewal of the gaming's contract with the magnate Stanley Ho, who ended up providing a fund that allowed the creation of the Oriente Foundation (Fundação Oriente) and its museum.[3]

Since 1988, Monjardino was Chairman of the board of directors of Fundação Oriente. He also holds management positions in other foundations, namely Fundação Monjardino, Fundação Mário Soares, Fundação Stanley Ho in Portugal and Fondation Universités de Paris - Résidence André de Gouveia (FUPRAG), in France.[2]

He is also a founding member and former President of the Portuguese Foundation Center and the European Foundation Center in Belgium.[2]

Among other activities, he was also chairman of the Board of TVI-Independent Television (1996-1997), administrator of Petrogal (1995-1998), Chairman of the board of Directors of Companhia de Seguros Sagres (2001-2008) and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Generg, SGPS, SA – empresa de energias renováveis (2003-2011).[2]
