Dr Hanan Ashrawi is a Palestinian legislator, activist, and scholar. She was a protégée and later colleague and close friend of Edward Said. Ashrawi was an important leader during the First Intifada, served as the official spokesperson for the Palestinian Delegation to the Middle East peace process, and has been elected numerous times to the Palestinian Legislative Council.

Speaking for Palestine

Dr Ashrawi is a member of former Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad's Third Way party.[1] She is the first woman elected to the Palestinian National Council.

Dr Ashrawi serves on the Advisory Board of several international and local organisations including the World Bank Middle East and North Africa (MENA), United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) and the International Human Rights Council.[2]

She received her bachelor's and master's degrees in literature in the Department of English at the American University of Beirut. Ashrawi also earned a PhD in Medieval and Comparative Literature from the University of Virginia.

Prince William's visit

Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) Executive Committee Member Dr Hanan Ashrawi released a statement saying:

“On behalf of the PLO Executive Committee and the Palestinian people, we welcome His Royal Highness the Duke of Cambridge on his scheduled visit to Palestine this Summer.”[3]

Gaza War (2023–24)

Interviewed on the BBC, 22 October 2023

Two weeks after the start of the Gaza War (2023–24) Hanan Ashrawi was interviewed by the BBC's Victoria Derbyshire (19:14 to 24:04).[4]

A commentator posted on X:

The BBC are disgusting. The manner in which they dehumanise Palestinians and are so dismissive of their guests.
Well done @DrHananAshrawi for schooling them.[5]

Israel's genocidal intent

On 12 November 2024, Hanan Ashrawi posted on X:

When Israeli officials (Netanyahu & Smotrich) openly declare their intention to impose Israeli sovereignty over all the West Bank, they’re just articulating what they’ve been doing gradually over decades with American officials disingenuously denying that this is Israeli policy.
Annexation, land theft, ethnic cleansing, and erasure of Palestine are the genocidal intent of Israel. Observe carefully.[6]
