The Independent Alliance (IA) is a pro-Palestinian parliamentary faction within the House of Commons of the United Kingdom made up of five MPs elected as Independents. The IA is not a political party, but is instead a technical group within parliament.

Background

The parliamentary group was formed on 2 September 2024 by Jeremy Corbyn, former Leader of the Labour Party, alongside Shockat Adam, Adnan Hussain, Ayoub Khan and Iqbal Mohamed. All five of its members were elected as Independent MPs in the UK/General election/2024. IA's formation was in part to gain more time to speak in parliament.

Upon its formation, the Independent Alliance became the joint-fifth largest grouping in the House of Commons, ahead of the Greens and Plaid Cymru at four each, and tied with Reform UK and the Democratic Unionist Party. In IA's first joint statement, it stated its opposition to austerity, the two-child benefit cap, and the sale of arms to Israel.[1]

New members welcome

IA also stated that more MPs were welcome to join the group, in reference to the seven suspended Labour MPs currently sitting as Independents: Apsana Begum, Richard Burgon, Ian Byrne, Imran Hussain, Rebecca Long-Bailey, John McDonnell and Zarah Sultana.[2]

Arms embargo to Israel

On 3 September 2024, Jeremy Corbyn posted on X:

We must continue to call for an immediate and total arms embargo to Israel.
A statement from the Independent Alliance.[3]
