Timothy James Walz is an American politician, former US Army non-commissioned officer, and retired educator who was elected the 41st Governor of Minnesota in 2019. He was a member of the United States House of Representatives from 2007 to 2019, representing Minnesota's 1st congressional district.

A member of the Democratic Party, Tim Walz was nominated by Kamala Harris for Vice President in the 2024 United States presidential election.[1]

Background

Born in West Point, Nebraska, Tim Walz joined the Army National Guard and worked a blue-collar manufacturing job after high school. He later graduated with a teaching degree from Chadron State College in Nebraska before moving to Minnesota in 1996. Before running for the US Congress, he worked as a social studies teacher and football coach in the Mankato school district.

Political career

Tim Walz was elected to the United States House of Representatives for Minnesota's 1st congressional district in 2006, defeating six-term Republican incumbent Gil Gutknecht. He was reelected five times, resigning in 2019 after being elected governor. Walz represented a large, mostly rural section of southern Minnesota situated along the border with Iowa.

He was elected Governor of Minnesota on 6 November 2018, defeating the Republican nominee, Hennepin County commissioner Jeff Johnson. He was reelected in the 2022 Minnesota gubernatorial election, defeating Republican nominee Scott Jensen.

VP nominee

On 6 August 2024, Vice President Kamala Harris announced her selection of Tim Walz as her running mate in the 2024 United States presidential election.

This followed a selection process in which Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, Illinois Governor J. B. Pritzker, and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro were also reported to be on the Harris campaign's shortlist prior to Walz's selection.[2]

Biden approves

In a post on X, President Biden said that Harris' choice of Walz - who he has known for two decades - was "great".

"The Harris-Walz ticket will be a powerful voice for working people and America's middle class. They will be the strongest defenders of our personal freedoms and our democracy.
"It's time for all Democrats - and indeed all Americans - committed to freedom, democracy and American leadership in the world to really behind the Harris-Walz ticket.
"Every generation of Americans faces a moment where they are asked to defend American democracy. That moment is now."[3]
