Official narrative
John Alpass originally planned to become a vicar. While training for ordination at Cambridge University he had a crisis of faith and decided not to proceed. Instead, he was recruited to MI5. John Alpass, who spent 27 years in a "variety of roles" in the security service.[2]
Review
When David Shayler went public, the MI5 appointed former deputy director John Alpass, who was a friend and colleague of MI5 chief Steven Lander, to conduct a broad review of all three intelligence organisations - MI5, MI6 and GCQ.[3]
