Capital of Libya |
Tripoli is the capital city and the largest city of Libya, with a population of about three million people in 2019.<ref">https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/fields/350.html </ref> It is located in the northwest of Libya on the edge of the desert, on a point of rocky land projecting into the Mediterranean Sea and forming a bay. It includes the port of Tripoli and the country's largest commercial and manufacturing center. It is also the site of the University of Tripoli.
The city used to be a well functioning and prosperous place with living standards comparable to Europe until the NATO-intervention in 2011. Due to the chaos afterwards and no funding for infrastructure, the city's population has sunk into poverty, but there is no longer a government capable of keeping statistics.
