The Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu or RIVM in Dutch), is a Dutch research institute that is presented as an independent agency. RIVM is tasked with promoting health and a safe living environment by conducting research and collecting knowledge worldwide. The results are - unsurprisingly - used to support the Dutch government in formulating its health policies.
Background
Although by law formulated as an independent agency, the institute is appointed by the Dutch Minister of Health, Welfare and Sport. A further peculiar segment in Dutch law is the fact that all research-programs have to be discussed and given a green light by three ministers. The minister of Health, Welfare & Sport isn't allowed by law to tell how a research-program will be executed.[1]
