Joanne McCartney, a British Labour Party politician and barrister, is London's Statutory Deputy Mayor. She was appointed by the newly elected Mayor of London Sadiq Khan on 9 May 2016.[1]
Politics
Joanne McCartney has been the London Assembly Member (AM) for Enfield and Haringey since 2004, and was re-elected on 5 May 2016 with a landslide majority over her Tory rival Linda Kelly. She said after winning Thursday’s election:
- “I am honoured to be re-elected as the Assembly Member for Enfield and Haringey and I will continue to work hard for local constituents on issues that matter to them. I want to offer my congratulations to Sadiq Khan on his historic victory. Sadiq’s election sends a clear message that Londoners have opted for someone who will get to grips with the challenges they face on a daily basis. Throughout his campaign, Sadiq has focused on the need for London to remain successful but be affordable for all who live here."
McCartney has considerable experience as an Assembly Member, having chaired its Police and Crime Committee and sat on the Budget and Performance Committee. McCartney was elected a councillor in the London Borough of Enfield in 1998, for Edmonton, then Palmers Green, and stood down at the 2006 local elections.[2]
Law
Joanne McCartney worked as a barrister specialising in employment law and helped establish a local Chambers in Enfield in the early 1990s. She also worked as an adjudicator for the Housing Ombudsman dealing with disputes between landlords and tenants.
She was a member of the Commission for Racial Equality.
