In 1985, the DGSE carried out a mission aimed at preventing protests by Greenpeace against French nuclear testing in the Pacific by sinking the Rainbow Warrior in Auckland, New Zealand on July 10, 1985. The ship was sunk and journalist Fernando Pereira drowned. New Zealand Police uncovered the plot after capturing Alain Mafart and Dominique Prieur, DGSE agents who pleaded guilty to manslaughter and arson. France threatened New Zealand with EEC sanctions in an attempt to secure the agents' release.
