Gerald F. M. P. Thompson was a UK banker who attended the 1974 Bilderberg meeting.
Career
He was the first chairman of Kleinwort Benson to be appointed from outside the family, he steered the bank through the banking crisis of 1973-74.[1] Under Thompson, the bank bowed to Arab pressure to exclude Jewish banks from financings involving Arab investors, and argued that it was 'crucially important for the dollar surpluses in the Arab countries to be reinvested productively".[2]
He corresponded with Margaret Thatcher.[3]
Arab Jewish boycott
"The merchant bankers, Kleinwort Benson, adhering to Arab demands earlier this year, excluded prominent Jewish-owned banks from a Eurobond transaction it was managing. Thebank's then chairman, Mr. Gerald Thompson, made it clear at the time that his company would respect the "restrictions" and "limitations" imposed by its Arab clients. Tesco, the chain-store giant, has now dropped Kleinwort as registrar and financial adviser. Sir John Cohen, 77-year-old founder and life president of Tesco, explained that 'he did not want to do business with such a bank'".[4]
