An alternative to Android, as of 2019 supporting 185 models of cellphone. |
LineageOS is an open source operating system for smartphones, tablet computers, and set-top boxes, with mostly free and open-source software. It is the successor to Android distribution CyanogenMod, from which it was forked in December 2016 when Cyanogen Inc. announced it was discontinuing development and shut down the infrastructure behind the project.[1][2] Since Cyanogen Inc. retained the rights to the Cyanogen name, the project rebranded its fork as LineageOS.[3]
LineageOS was officially launched on 24 December 2016, with the source code available on both GitHub and GitLab.[4][5] In March 2017, it reportedly had one million users with the OnePlus One being the most popular device.[6]
