One of the main scientific fig leafs used to justify measures during the COVID-19 deep event in Australia.

The Burnet Institute is an Australian medical research institute that combines medical research in the laboratory and the field, with public health action to address major health issues[1]. It is one of the main institutions used to manufacture a scientific alibi for the government's measures during the COVID-19 deep event.

Infamously, its 2021 study that was meant to justify mandatory face masks, was based on a cursory scan of newspaper images, and was characterized as "crap" by fellow researchers.[2]

Official Narrative

The Burnet Institute has particular expertise in infectious diseases (especially HIV, hepatitis viruses, influenza and malaria) and in understanding the immune responses to these infections. Their work also focuses on sexual health, drug and alcohol use, both in risky behaviours associated with infectious diseases and as major health problems in their own right. Translating new knowledge into tangible and practical health outcomes is also a major focus of the institute.

COVID-19

The state of Victoria first made face masks mandatory outside the home in Melbourne during in July 2020, but the Department of Health has been unable to provide any scientific research or studies upon which the decision was made. When asked a year later, in July 2021, it pointed to a study by the Burnet Institute.

The study, published in the journal Plos One, purported to show that mandating masks was the “single most important control measure” that “turned an exponential increase in community transmission into an exponential decrease, almost overnight”. The study declared that 12 of its authors “provide guidance to the Victorian government’s Covid-19 response”.[2][3]

The study was severely criticized by several other medical experts for its deeply flawed methodology as of "very, very low quality". The study:

We assessed changes in mask-wearing behaviours using images from the digital archive of The Age, one of the two major daily Victorian newspapers. To ensure we captured all images (not just those published), the librarian/digital archivist from the newspaper reviewed consecutive photos in their archive that were taken between July 10 and August 2, 2020 (14 days before and 14 days after mandatory mask policy introduction). From these, all photos taken in public locations in urban Melbourne, such as streetscapes and shopping centres, and contained clear images of people were extracted and used to calculate the proportion of people wearing masks in public.[2]

Its annual surplus (essentially its annual profit) skyrocketed during COVID-19.[4]

Macfarlane Burnet

Sir Macfarlane Burnet (1899-1985), the 1960 Nobel prize winner revered as Australia's greatest medical research scientist, secretly urged the government to develop biological weapons for use against Indonesia and other "overpopulated" countries of South-East Asia. In a secret report in 1947 that biological and chemical weapons should be developed to target food crops and spread infectious diseases.[5]

In 1978 he advised the abortion of defective fetuses, infanticide of children with severe genetic disorders, euthanasia for patients with incurable diseases, and the death penalty for those who were a danger to society.[6]
