Hurricane Katrina was a hurricane which caused over 1,800 deaths and $125 billion in damage in late August 2005. The most damage was suffered in New Orleans, Louisiana.
FEMA Director Michael Brown was "disgraced" by his lack of action and resigned as a result.[1][2] Reports emerged that food and water was deliberately withheld from survivors in the SuperDome and elsewhere,[3] lethal force was advocated to responding forces in the disaster zone.[4]

Shootings
There were conflicting reports about how many people were shot for looting. The police force was getting order to do so.[5][6][7][8][9] Blackwater mercenaries were sent in the disaster zone,[10][11][12] and a detachment of 300 National Guard troops with the authorisation to shoot and kill "hoodlums".[13][14] By some accounts deadly force targeted primarily people of color searching for food.[15][16][17][18]
Outcome
Increased gentrification of some parts of New Orleans.[citation needed]
