The European Coal and Steel Community was a step towards the European Union.

Origins

Jean Monnet was President of the High Authority of the European Coal and Steel Community, from 1952 to 1955. His principal private secretary was Georges Berthoin.

Purposes

Georges Berthoin stated that the purpose from the outset was to facilitate European integration.
