A Canadian government policy regarding transgenderism in schools.

Policy 713 is an education policy in New Brunswick, Canada, that sets minimum requirements for public schools and districts in regards to LGBTQIA2S+.

Overview

The policy, enacted in 2020, requires school personnel to respect students' pronouns and chosen names, requires each school to have at least one gender-neutral bathroom, and for parents to be kept in the dark regarding the gender identity of their children.[1] After Premier Blaine Higgs pushed for a policy review, he was protested by students and criticised by the CBC.[2]

One council member said, "For us to put an age limit where the parent is contacted if a child decides to speak to a guidance counsellor to join an alliance group, or whatever it may be that would be outing that child to the parents, which may be hostile".[3]

On April 21, 2023, Policy 713 was placed under review by Premier Blaine Higgs and the provincial government. The revised policy, released in June 2023, included changes that forbade New Brunswick teachers from using the preferred names and pronouns of students under the age of 16 without parental consent.[4] Kelly Lamrock, the Child, Youth and Seniors' Advocate for New Brunswick, criticized the revision and stated it opened the province to legal risk.[5]
