The Moderna COVID‑19 vaccine (elasomeran), codenamed mRNA-1273 and sold under the brand name Spikevax, is a COVID-19 vaccine developed by Moderna, the United States National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA).

It is authorized for use in people aged twelve years and older in some jurisdictions and for people eighteen years and older in other jurisdictions.

It is an RNA vaccine composed of nucleoside-modified mRNA (modRNA) encoding a spike protein of SARS-CoV-2, which is encapsulated in lipid nanoparticles.

Japanese Moderna suspension

On 26 August 2021, Japan suspended use of the Moderna COVID vaccine over concerns of contamination., after two men died. The men, 30 and 38, died within days of receiving their second shots on Aug. 22 and 15, respectively. Since deaths after COVID vaccines hardly are unheard of, the recall is unusual.

The official story is that the 3 lots of the Moderna Covid vaccine doses are to be recalled because they had a stainless steel contamination erlated to friction between two pieces of metal in the instrument used to put stoppers in bottles. . Moderna’s domestic distributor in Japan, Takeda Pharmaceutical, stated “stainless steel is routinely used in heart valves, joint replacements and metal sutures and staples. As such, it is not expected that injection of the particles identified in these lots in Japan would result in increased medical risk,” but of course this is hardly the same as micro-particles in the bloodstream.

Earlier in 2021, a Spanish study claimed to have found Graphene oxide in the vaccines. While the study should be treated with caution as it been strongly questioned, the contamination with "black particles" certainly has some relevance for it.
