John Henry Stein was a US spook who was CIA Deputy Director for Operations from 1981 until 1984. [1]
Background
Stein attended prep school in Rhode Island, where "those who knew him best described Stein as a brilliant student, who could simply look at the syllabus and receive an "A" in the course."[2] He graduated from Yale University in 1955.[3]
After Yale, he was conscripted to the 82nd Airborne Divison.[2]
Career
Stein’s overseas service for CIA took him from Africa to Europe. He had intelligence positions from 1959 to 1981 in countries such as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, (Zaire), Cameroon, Cambodia, Libya and twice in Brussels, Belgium.[4]
"He was known as a straight shooter, never mincing words, the twinkle of his blue eyes reflecting the grace and joy he brought to all who came in contact with him. Meeting Stein, one could tell the talent he had in recruiting agents."[2]
He worked in the CIA as CIA/Deputy Director for Operations and then Inspector General of the Central Intelligence Agency. While DDO under former CIA Director William Casey, he escaped sanction during the Iran-Contra scandal as he reportedly was not part of the planning nor execution of the operation.[2]
