The Democracy Alliance is a network of billionaire donors who coordinate their political donations to groups that the Alliance has endorsed, anonymously and often through foundations working as middlemen to hide the where the money is coming from[1][2][3]. It has been described as "the country's most powerful liberal donor club"[4], a “vast liberal conspiracy,” and a "DA-funded extra-party political machine".[5]
Membership
As of 2015, the Democracy Alliance, which does not disclose its membership, is reported to have about 110 members. Members of the Democracy Alliance are required to contribute at least $200,000 a year to groups the Democracy Alliance vets and recommends. As of 2014, the Alliance had helped distribute approximately $500 million to selected organizations since its founding in 2005. In 2017 and 2018 alone, Democracy Alliance members spent $600 million on various liberal causes.[4]
Under the original conception of the Democracy Alliance, the group “would not dole out money itself, but collectively the partners would meet twice a year through its auspices to decide which organizations to fund.”[6]
Because the Democracy Alliance “serves as a ‘pass through’ for donations to supported groups” there is no “public documentation revealing DA’s role in the fundraising process” As a result of this structure, “few contributions made to organizations through the Alliance are public.”[7]
