Investigation

In the late 1960s Lancashire police carried out several investigations into Cyril Smith's sexual behaviour with juveniles, compiling an 80-page file, and may have been ready to prosecute.[1]

Arrest for child sex

Jack Tasker, a retired Lancashire Police Detective Sergeant who carried out the third investigation into Smith in 1969 following two by Rochdale police, told Sky News the MP may have exposed several other sex offenders. He said the investigation into his alleged child abuse at Cambridge House care home was stalled because “other people were rather worried that if Cyril Smith went before a court, he would open his mouth”.[2]

Protection

UK Special branch officer, Tony Robinson, reports receiving a call in 1977 from ‘Box 500’, the police codeword for MI5, requesting the file on Smith's sexual behaviour with children be sent to them in London by special courier.[3]
