David John Nellist is a former Labour Party MP for the constituency of Coventry South East from 1983 to 1992. His support for the Militant Tendency led to his eventual expulsion from the party in late 1991.

TUSC

Dave Nellist is the National Chair of the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC), a member of the Socialist Party, and was a city councillor in Coventry from 1998 to 2012.

By-election

Dave Nellist is standing as the TUSC candidate in the 2022 Birmingham Erdington by-election on 3 March 2022.[1]

Socialist alternative

Nellist says:

“In the General Election of 2019, barely half the people in Erdington were inspired to vote for any candidate, one of the lowest turnouts across the country. We think we understand why, and we hope to give some of those in the constituency who were turned off by all politicians in the past a reason to vote on March 3 by the socialist alternative we offer.”[2]

Twitter support

On 16 February 2022, Damian from Brighton tweeted:

@UKLabour voters in Birmingham Erdington who think the party has lost its way under Keir Starmer's leadership and want a left wing candidate who will challenge the Tories in parliament should vote for @davenellist. #VoteDaveNellist[3]
