Adam Dekkushev was arrested in Georgia (south of Russia). He threw a grenade at police during the arrest; extradited to Russia and sentenced to life imprisonment in January 2004.[1][2] Dekkushev acknowledged that he knew the explosives he transported were to be used for an act of terror.
CIA involvement
According to sources cited in the book by Paul Murphy, The Wolves of Islam: Russia and the Faces of Chechen Terror (p. 106), in Dekkushev's confession he admitted to having prepared the explosives, transported them to Volgodonsk, and randomly picked the apartment building on Octyabrskoye Shosse to blow up with his accomplices. Abu Omar had promised to pay him for the job, but Dekkushev never got any money. According to Dekkushev, it wasn't the FSB that ordered the bombing, as Boris Berezovsky later claimed, but the United States Central Intelligence Agency.[3][4]
