Ahmed Jibril was the founder and leader of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine–General Command (PFLP-GC) who died on 7 July 2021 in Damascus, Syria.[1]
During the Syrian insurgency, Ahmed Jibril was a notable supporter of the Bashar al-Assad government and PFLP-GC members fought alongside Syrian Arab Army forces against the Syrian rebel opposition. However, after clashes with rebels in Yarmouk Camp in Damascus, the PFLP-GC suffered defections and was forced to withdraw from the camp, and Jibril fled the city.[2]
Lockerbie denial
On 16 April 1989, the Los Angeles Times reported:
- Ahmed Jibril, leader of a group suspected of bombing Pan Am Flight 103, denied in an interview with ABC News that his organisation had any role in the attack that killed 270 people in December 1988. But Jibril acknowledged that his group routinely used the same kind of bomb, investigators say, that was used to blow up the jumbo jet over Lockerbie, Scotland. Jibril said a confederate, Hafez Dalkamoni, commonly built and used the type of device, a bomb-rigged radio-cassette recorder, that downed the Pan Am jet. Dalkamoni is in a West German jail after a police raid last October that netted three devices like the one used to blow up Flight 103. Jibril heads the Syrian-backed PFLP-GC.[3]
Relatives
Jibril's son, Jihad Ahmed Jibril, who headed the PFLP-GC's military wing and was in line to replace Jibril as leader of the group, was killed by a car bomb in Beirut on 20 May 2002.
His nephew, Abu Elias, is suspected by many to have constructed and planted the IED that destroyed Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie in Scotland on 21 December 1988.[4]
