History
The CIA organised a coup in 1954 which deposed Jacobo Arbenz in order to protect the profits of United Fruit.
Rios Montt
On 10 May 2013, Guatemalan General Rios Montt (friend of Ronald Reagan) became the only former head of state ever to have been convicted in his own country for genocide. On 8 July 2015 a Guatemalan court stated that the trial must be abandoned, as Montt was "mentally incompetent to stand trial". A retrial of his case had been promised, but Eric Zuesse opines that this "seems unlikely".[1]
