The Unification Church, also called the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification, is a religious movement whose members are known as "Moonies".
It was officially founded on 1 May 1954 by Sun Myung Moon (1920–2012), a Korean Messiah claimant who was known for his business ventures, engagement in social and political causes and owner of The Washington Times.
In Japan in 2022, about 40 percent of newly appointed senior vice ministers and parliamentary secretaries and another Cabinet member acknowledged having ties to the Unification Church or its related organizations. The church was also connected to lawmakers of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party in high administrative positions.[1]
