LA's underground infrastructure, some of it abandoned. |
Los Angeles has a lot of underground infrastructure, like former railways.[2][3][4] Some of those were used during prohibition.[5][6] Adding to that are underground shelters erected during the Cold War.
"Beginning in 1901, workers dug under the Bunker and Hill Street area, creating subterranean roads to help mitigate traffic on downtown’s congested streets. Pacific Electric Red Cars had their own system of tunnels, and there were many old passages under Olvera Street and Old Chinatown, some dating back to the 19th century. In addition, smaller underground passageways were used to link different buildings, including the Hotel Rosslyn, which had a basement bar."[7]

"By 1966, there were more than 2,900 fallout shelters located in both privately owned and government buildings, with a shelter capacity of more than 5.4 million people. Shelters were located across Central, South, and West Los Angeles, as well as the San Fernando Valley. Major public buildings had fallout as well as universities including several buildings at UCLA and USC. Additionally, most primary and secondary schools, hospitals, public utility buildings, banks, churches and police stations, along with several apartments and McDonald’s restaurants maintained fallout shelters during the Cold War period."[8]
Actor Bahn
The Actor Bahn is an alleged system of underground tunnels used for travel by Hollywood celebrities in order to avoid LA traffic.[9][10][11] It was discussed between Comedian Steven Randolph and actor/comedian Bill Posley [12] in October 2024 and meant as a prank.[13][14]
In what might have been an April's fool prank, Playboy magazine claimed to have discovered a collection of blueprints detailing a series of underground tunnels that connected the Playboy mansion to other homes in the area, including those of "Mr. J. Nicholson," "Mr. W. Beatty," "Mr. K. Douglas" and "Mr. J. Caan." The tunnels were supposedly closed up sometime in 1989.[15]
Boring Company Loop
The Loop is a 6000 foot (~1800 meter) tunnel for electrical cars, meant as a proof of concept that a number of these tunnels could end the traffic problem in LA.[16]
Los Angeles Metro Rail
The Los Angeles Metro Rail is an urban rail transit system with a total of 102 stations.[17]
