Even mainstream sources started to speak of the Ministry of Truth from 1984, since it was used that often as a point of reference.[1][2][3]

DHS effort to centralize their fight of "disinformation", got closed after public backlash.[4][5]

The Disinformation Governance Board was intended as an advisory board of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to protect "national security" by disseminating guidance to DHS agencies on:

  • combating misinformation
  • malinformation
  • disinformation that threatens the security of the homeland

On May 18, the board and its working groups were "paused" pending review, and board head Nina Jankowicz resigned as a result of public backlash, mostly from the political right, although criticism also came from progressives and civil libertarians.[6] On August 24, 2022, DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas disbanded the board.

A Final Report of the Disinformation Best Practices and Safeguards Subcommittee on August 24, 2022 found that:[7]

[...] the Department of Homeland Security does not have a broad remit to address all inaccurate information or disinformation, nor does it have the authority to silence or sanction anyone’s speech. Rather, its efforts should focus on (a) assessing whether publicly disseminated disinformation impedes missions assigned to the agency by law and (b) disseminating correct information.
The Department can and should speak publicly to accurately inform the public of disinformation. The Department already engages in much of this activity to good effect. [...]

According to Russia Today,[8] Chertoff said:

"They don’t have a red pencil to correct everything in the world that’s not true,"
