In 2019, Bibbiano, a commune (municipality) in the Italian province of Emilia-Romagna, was the scene of a case related to the sexual abuse of minors[1].
The case was exposed in August 2018, after an abnormal increase in the number of children "removed" from their parents, often on the pretext of a fabricated sexual assault, which alerted law enforcement authorities who decided to open an investigation[2]. The investigation led to the arrest, on June 27, 2019, of 18 people, including doctors, social workers and politicians from the Democratic Party, which is ruling the country as of 2023. They were suspected of manipulating children to separate them from their parents and sell them to foster families, some of whom allegedly sexually abused them.
Public reaction
Following what was felt by the Italian population as a media silence on the subject, posters bloomed throughout Italy with the mention Parlateci di Bibbiano ("Tell us about Bibbiano")[3]. At the beginning of August 2019, the seats of the Democratic Party were also vandalized with this slogan in Rome and Turin. A parallel has been drawn with the case of Devils of the Lower Modena (also in Emilia-Romagna), in the 1990s.

Senator Matteo Renzi of the Democratic Party spoke out against the political exploitation of the case.[4] According to Romano Prodi of the Democratic Party, it is the media that is seeking demonization[5]
