Covid
In December 2021, Major General Rudolf Striedinger took over the management of the newly created national Covid crisis coordination (GECKO) together with Chief Medical Officer Katharina Reich. Striedinger was Deputy Chief of the General Staff and former Head of the Defense Office; he was Military Commander of Lower Austria from 2011 to 2016. In March 2016, Striedinger was appointed Head of the Counterintelligence Office; and later, Minister of Defense Klaudia Tanner appointed him as her Chief of Staff.[1]
"GECKO is to inform and advise the government in view of the threat posed by the new Omikron variant and make proposals for implementation. Thanks to the dual leadership of Chief Medical Officer Katharina Reich and Major General Rudolf Striedinger, Gecko will not only provide advice, but will also be able to provide operational support during implementation.[1]
