Career
In 1970 he was undersecretary of State for Commerce.[1]
He was minister of Commerce and Tourism in 1981 and vice-governor of Banco de Portugal (1983-1986). He was president (1986-1991) and vice president (1992-1996) of Banco Espírito Santo, before and after its privatization.[2] He then joined the state-owned Caixa Geral de Depósitos (1996-2000) Portugal's largest bank.
