Prof Dr Alexander Mattelaer is the Academic Director of the Institute for European Studies at the Free University of Brussels. He is also a Senior Research Fellow at Egmont – the Royal Institute for International Relations, and a visiting professor at the College of Europe in Bruges. As a Fulbright Schuman fellow he completed research stays at Harvard University and at the National Defense University (in USA). He sits on the scientific committee of the Belgian Royal Higher Institute for Defence. He obtained his PhD in Political Science from the Free University of Brussels and Master degrees from the University of Bath and the University of Leuven.
His research interests include the politics of European integration, transatlantic relations, defence policy-making, and the ongoing redefinition of state sovereignty. At the Free University of Brussels he teaches the courses 'Political Structures and Processes of the European Union' and 'International Security and Strategic Studies'. At the College of Europe in Bruges, he teaches on 'European Defence Cooperation and NATO'.
