The Ministry of Health (MS) is the department of the Government of Portugal whose mission is to define and conduct national health policy, ensuring the sustainable application and use of resources and the evaluation of their results.

The porugese National Health Service (SNS) is a structure through which the Portuguese State ensures the right to health (promotion, prevention and surveillance of health) for all citizens of Portugal. Its creation dates back to 1979, to meet the political and social conditions arising from the Portuguese political restructuring of the 1970s.
