The University of Haifa is a public research university on the top of Mount Carmel in Haifa, Israel. The university was founded in 1963 by the mayor of its host city, Abba Hushi, to operate under the academic auspices of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Overview

18,100 students study a wide variety of specialties, including social sciences, humanities, law and education. It is broadly divided into six faculties: humanities, social sciences, law, science and science education, social services, as well as health and education sciences. Beyond the goal of providing good higher education, the University of Haifa aims to bring equal educational opportunities to all sectors of society, and in particular to encourage mutual understanding and understanding and cooperation between Jewish and Arab populations on and off campus.

The university is home to the Hecht Museum of Archeology and Art and several research centers and institutes including the Institute for Evolution, the Center for the Study of the Information Society, the Center for the Study National Security, Tourism Research Center and many others. The university also hosts a large IBM research center on its campus.

Arab-Israelis

Among Israeli higher education institutions the University of Haifa has the largest percentage (41%) of Arab-Israeli students.[1]

According to the Israeli writer Yitzhak Laor, 20% of the students at Haifa University were Israeli Arabs in 2010, but not even 1% of the teaching staff and less than 0.5% of the administrative and technical staff. Laor accused the university of racist discrimination.[2]
