Michael Meyen is a German academic and media researcher at the University of Munich.
Investigation
In 2023, at the request of his university management, the intelligence service the Bavarian Office for the Protection of the Constitution started investigating whether Meyen is "an extremist who opposes the liberal democratic basic order". The formal cause was whether he had become this by becoming co-editor of the newspaper "Democratic Resistance"[1]. If the intelligence service concludes that he is, then this will cost him his job according to the civil service law.[2]
The investigation comes as a defamation campaign was intensified against him in corporate and state media.[3] The campaign had been ongoing since 2020, when it became clear that he did not follow the official corona narrative. Already in 2022 Die Zeit called him a "someone who had drifted away" and wondered why Meyen was still allowed to teach at all.[4]
