People are excluded from the banking system for their political views and activism.

People have been excluded from the banking system for their political views and activism. The practice has increased dramatically after 2020.

Canada

In response to the Canada freedom convoy of 2022 against Covid, at least 76 bank accounts linked to the protests totaling CA$3.2 million were frozen under the Emergencies Act.[1]

United States

In the US, financial regulation (like the Wells notice and internal bank regulations pertaining to politically exposed persons) is used to make live harder for Crypto and Fintech startups that are a threat to the established banking system. A practice that was increasingly used during the Biden administration according to Marc Andreessen,[2] but which started during the Obama administration against legal Marijuana, escort businesses and gun-shops, then termed Operation Choke Point 1.0 .

Germany

Dissidents are systematically debanked.[3][4]
