Symbolic city for the European Union, venue for 1980 Bilderberg. |
Aachen (also known by its French name Aix-la-Chapelle) is a small, but symbolically important city. The city is the westernmost city in Germany and borders Belgium and the Netherlands to the west, and was the preferred medieval Imperial residence of Emperor Charlemagne of the Frankish Empire, a Franco-German king heavily used as a symbol by the European Union.
The city was host for the 1980 Bilderberg conference. The venue, the Quellenhof Hotel, was one of the most renowned spa hotels in Germany in the first half of the 20th century. After a phase of decline caused by the Second World War, it reopened in 1949.
Aachen developed from a Roman settlement, and spa[1] and from 936 to 1531, the place where 31 Holy Roman Emperors were crowned Kings of the Germans.
With around 249,000 inhabitants, the 13th-largest city of North Rhine-Westphalia, and the 28th-largest city of Germany.
