Emily O'Reilly is an author and former journalist and broadcaster who became Ireland's first female Ombudsman in 2003, succeeding Kevin Murphy.[1] On 3 July 2013, she was voted European Ombudsman by the European Parliament.[2] She was re-elected in 2014[3] and in 2019,[4] in each case for a mandate of five more years.
Pfizer price gouging
In November 2023, O'Reilly said she was amazed at how such a prominent figure as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen "isn’t questioned harder on her missing Pfizer texts". When a request for access to those messages was made, the [European Commission]] stated that it had "no record" of them. Text messages, it claimed, are often "short-lived" and, as such, are not subject to its record-keeping requirements.[5]
O'Reilly has been repeatedly questioning von der Leyen about the texts between her and Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla. The Commission agreed to exorbitant pricing negotiated for the mRNA COVID vaccinations. The Ombudsman accused the executive of "maladministration" in January 2022.[5]
