Advanced computing technology, not very well understood, but deemed risky for a world where computers will be massively important for even the most daily tasks.

Quantum computing is a potentially revolutionary advance in the field of computing, using quantum effects to vastly increase computational power.

Explanation

Where are the limits of human technology? And can we somehow avoid them? This is where quantum computers become very interesting.

Quantum mechanics is a fundamental theory in physics that describes the behaviour of nature at the scale of atoms and subatomic particles. Quantum computing - simply said - aims to use that for daily computing tasks.

Adaption

Scientists from the University of Sussex achieved quantum computing breakthroughs in 2023. The technology was feared to render the encryption behind passwords obsolete, making emails, personal data, or banking insecure in the 2020s.[1] Tech companies like AMD and Nvidia doubled their stock prices by 50% and suddenly became the part of the largest 10 companies in the world by revenue because of these advances.[2]

Interest

Applications involve CPU-intensive processes such as modelling and cracking encryption.

The technology was on the agenda of the 2018 Bilderberg.
