A tripwire force is a strategic approach to deter an adversary from attack. The tripwire force is a military contingent smaller (often much smaller) than that of a potential adversary, which would (depending on the size and capability more or less fast) get annihilated during the initial stages of an attack - but would trigger the defense of the attacked and give a cause to respond militarily.
