Fergus Walsh is a British journalist who has been the BBC's medical editor since 2020, a newly created role "in recognition of his coverage of the COVID-19 pandemic",[1] despite having no qualifications in medicine at all.
From March 2020 onwards, Walsh was one of the first and most effective purveyors of “Covid” fearporn in the corporate media[2]. Millions of viewers watched breathlessly as he crept round hospitals in his hazmat suit, followed by a shaky handheld camera.
Fergus Walsh has previously been medical correspondent for the BBC since 2006. and has been commended for his work in making important health topics "more understandable to the public".
His wife, Veronique, is a manager in the pharmaceutical industry, having received a new job in June 2019.[3] Having spent over 20 years "working in the field of vaccines,” her company "participates in several cross-industry groups designed to foster collaboration and ensure that we are not duplicating research"[4]. (e.g. Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation)
Education
He attended the Royal Grammar School in High Wycombe, and obtained an English literature degree from Leeds University in 1983. Walsh completed a post-graduate course in Broadcast Journalism at University College Falmouth, in Cornwall.[5]
Veronique Walsh
His wife is a manager in the pharma industry, at Bristol Myers Squibb (BMS), where she received a new managerial position in June 2019. Walsh worked her way up at Pasteur, later acquired by Sanofi, before joining BMS in 2010. Before taking over management of the Benelux markets in June 2019, Walsh acted as general manager for the UK and Ireland market.
BMS is "participating in several cross-industry groups and public-private partnerships designed to foster collaboration and coordinate industry response efforts". They are "one of 15 companies participating in the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s COVID-19 Therapeutics Accelerator to identify concrete actions to accelerate treatments, vaccines, and diagnostics."[4]
In a July 2020 interview, Veronique stated[6][7]:
“I wanted to see how I could have more impact on patients, perhaps even to stop them from getting sick at all. Having completed an MBA to better understand the industry, I spent over 20 years working in the field of vaccines.”
“I have been very impressed not only by the complexity of the Belgian healthcare system but also the determination to bring effective healthcare to patients.”
“We are also participating in several cross-industry groups designed to foster collaboration and ensure that we are not duplicating research (e.g. Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation)”
“Belgium is known as the Pharma Valley of Europe.”
“BMS pioneered immunotherapy, a class of medicines that harnesses the power of the immune system to treat cancer.”
“We are working with researchers, the biotech community, and the broader life sciences industry on ways we together can accelerate therapies for COVID-19.”
