A Tory politician who was widely alleged to have abused children, but whose "trial of the facts" was dropped after his death.

Greville Janner, a.k.a. Lord Janner was charged with 22 sexual offences dating back to the 1960s against nine boys and men, but because of his dementia, he was deemed unfit to be tried. Nevertheless, a decision was made to proceed with a trial of the facts. The trial would have had no power to sentence Janner, who was not required to be present. Its purpose would have been to try to establish what had gone on.

Trial abandonment

However, in January 2016, the prosecutor Richard Whittam QC told the trial judge, Mr Justice Openshaw, that the proceedings planned for the Old Bailey in April that year. His decision has been widely criticised.[1]
