Shawn Slovo is a screenwriter, best known for the film A World Apart, based on her childhood in apartheid-era South Africa. She is the eldest daughter of South African Communist Party leaders Joe Slovo and Ruth First. When she was 13 years old, in 1963, her father, watched more and more by the secret services, went underground so as not to be imprisoned like Nelson Mandela, then left the country with his family. In March 1964, Shawn accompanied her mother who settled in England.
She wrote the screenplay for the 2006 film Catch a Fire (also a historical film about apartheid), and for the 2001 film Captain Corelli's Mandolin.[1][2]
In the late 1970s she served as Robert De Niro's personal assistant while he made the films Raging Bull and The King of Comedy. She also made the screenplay for Muhammad Ali's Greatest Fight.
Shawn Slovo currently lives in London and often works for 'Working Title Films'. Her younger sister Gillian Slovo is a novelist and playwright, and her youngest sister Robyn Slovo is a film producer.
