2022 Birmingham Erdington by-election

A by-election for the United Kingdom parliamentary constituency of Birmingham Erdington is expected to be held on 3 March 2022 after the writ was issued on 31 January 2022. It was triggered by the death of the Labour Member of Parliament (MP) Jack Dromey on 7 January 2022.[1]

Candidates

The Labour Party selected Paulette Hamilton, who is Birmingham City Council's cabinet member for Health and Social Care. She was selected in a virtual hustings against Ashley Bertie, the former West Midlands deputy police and crime commissioner, receiving 82 votes to Bertie's 32.[2]

The Conservative Party selected Robert Alden, who had contested the seat in the previous four general elections.[3]

Reform UK (formerly the Brexit Party) are standing Birmingham postman Jack Brookes.

The Liberal Democrats are standing Lee Dargue. He works in the rail sector, occupational health and safety and environmental management.

The Green Party selected local businesswoman Siobhan Harper-Nunes as their candidate.

Michael Lutwyche is standing as an independent. Lutwyche is a Justice-4-the-21 campaigner, supporting the victims of the Birmingham pub bombings.

Dave Nellist, standing for the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC), was the Labour MP for Coventry South East from 1983 to 1992.[4]

Results

The winner was Paulette Hamilton, standing for Labour, who got 55.5% of the votes in a turnout of 27% of the electorate:

  • Siobhan Harper-Nunes (Green) 236 (1.39%)
  • Lee Dargue (LD) 173 (1.02%)
  • Michael Lutwyche (Ind) 109 (0.64%)
  • Mel Mbondiah (CPA) 79 (0.47%)
  • Thomas O’Rourke (Ind) 76 (0.45%)
  • SirNosDa The Good Knight (Loony) 49 (0.29%)
  • Clifton Holmes (Ind) 14 (0.1%)
  • David Bishop (Militant Elvis) 8 (0.0%)[5]
