Witness in the Benjamin Netanyahu corruption trial who died in explosive plane crash.

Haim Geron was a key witness in the Benjamin Netanyahu corruption trial. He deputy general at the Israeli Communications Ministry.[1] Geron and his wife died in a fiery plane crash in 2021.

Netanyahu corruption trial

Geron was one of more than 300 witnesses that prosecutors listed for Netanyahu's trial, where the former PM is accused of using his position in order to illicitly and very lucratively benefit the business interests of Shaul Elovitch, the controlling shareholder of the telecom company Bezeq. In exchange, Elovitch allegedly provided Netanyahu and his family with positive coverage on the Elovitch-owned Walla news website.

In May 2020, Geron, an attorney by training, spoke on radio about the testimony he had given in the Netanyahu trial and said it related to the development of the country’s optical fiber infrastructure, the communications industry, and telephone services. Probed as to whether he had ever witnessed any criminal activity at the ministry, Geron respond that "the court is the only one that can determine if something is criminal or not." He stressed that he was not questioned about the Bezeq-Yes deal, which is a key element of the trial.[2]

Death

He and his wife were killed in a plane crash in September 2021.[3] They were the only occupants on board the Cessna 182 aircraft. "Shortly before landing, communication with the control tower on Samos was lost and the Civil Aviation Authority informed the search and rescue center about the loss of communication," the Greek Air Accident Investigation and Aviation Board said in a statement. "A local fisherman said there was a big explosion, followed by a smaller one."[1]
