The European Commissioner for the Security Union is a job which arose after Jean-Claude Juncker called for such a post after the 2016 Brussels Bombing.[1]
The post was a pretext for an expansion of EU activities, to encompass a "Security Union". Since 2016, the EU has linked together its range of security databases and has given law enforcement agencies wider access to EU data. The Security Union has a stated focus "on cross-border challenges such as border controls, information sharing, money laundering, trafficking of firearms and the investigation and prosecution of serious crimes like terrorism".[2]
